A week after the last Shadow Market was held, Vic and Arthur Shadow are wrapping up the last transactions and trades. Vic convinces a wealthy collector of the historical value of a mummified lizard, while Arthur talks him up to a sweeter price. As they pack up the mummy, the family is visited in their rundown antiques shop by Dead Ringer – a skeletal middleman from Necropolis, venturing into the mortal world. He tells the Shadows he’s looking for the Book of Dead Names – an old, handwritten book containing the names of ghosts that might be in the Lagrange Library – and that those he represents will pay well for it.
Meanwhile, Thomas drives around the streets of New Jerusalem, trying to track down a passageway to Elfland. His magic leads him to an abandoned school near the industrial works, but he realises it actually leads to the Night Lands, the realm of chimera – and that it’s been used recently. On the way home, he’s followed by a large man in a red car, but he spots the tail and manages to lose him.
Gwen and Charlotte transport the lizard mummy to the buyer, in the (relatively) wealthy residential district of Nobility Hill. When they leave, they see a creature fiddling with Gwen’s Vespa – a Blighted One, one of the chimera that have been kidnapping children! While Charlotte checks the scooter, Gwen chases the Blighted One into nearby Century Park, where she discovers the corpse of another Blighted One, shot in the head – and is then attacked by four of them! The creatures are dangerous, but Gwen is more so, and she manages to dispatch two of them, scare off a third and capture the fourth, taking the furious (but small) creature back to the shop.
At the shop, Gwen releases the Blighted One into the bathroom, which it tears apart while trying to escape. Eventually Arthur manages to calm it down, and the creature reveals that it and its comrades have been forced to serve the Butcher Bishop, a powerful lord of Hell. Some of the Blighted Ones have been stealing children, but this pack was trying to reclaim the Bishop’s stolen mitre. The chimera tracked the item to a secure space under the fountain in Century Park, but were unable to retrieve it. Facing their own concerns about the Butcher Bishop, the Shadows let the creature go, and decide to retrieve the mitre themselves.
Thomas returns, and consults his books of lore (with Vic’s help) to find out more about the Book of Dead Names. They confirm that, despite the title, it’s not the Necronomicon but a tool that can be used to contact and speak with the dead – something useful to both the undead and mortal occultists. Since the library is near Nobility Hill, they decide to search both locations tonight, and Charlotte hacks security cameras and historical records to get useful information.
Everyone heads to Century Park, in Thomas’ old car and Gwen’s scooter; Gwen keeps watch while Vic does his Indiana Jones thing. He discovers a remarkably high-tech lock on the fountain’s maintenance hatch – and a claymore mine set to explode if it’s tampered with! Vic manages to overcome both defenses and enters a hidden room under the fountain, where he finds a footlocker bound in chains and surrounded by a magic circle, drawn in salt and blood. Gwen and Charlotte join him, and Charlotte discerns that the circle acts as magical concealment for what’s in the box, as well as preventing entry – and exit.
Charlotte uses her witchcraft to break the circle, and a strange smoke immediately begins to rise from the ground below. The three of them take the locker and get out as the floor collapses – and a large goat-headed demon climbs up from Hell into the circle! The creature locks eyes with Gwen as they escape, and the Shadows drive away from the park as the fountain collapses in a cloud of brick and oily smoke…
