Shadows of New Jerusalem
Chimera are the denizens of the Night Lands and the citizens of Wormwood. They are creatures of dream and nightmare, spirits who draw their shape and purpose from the imagination of mortals.
Born from the churn and chaos of human dreams, chimera know that they owe their very identity to mortal nightmares. They are generally too pragmatic to resent this. Generally. But they also know that shifts in mortal fears and imaginings can reshape their very natures, and many of them wish to safeguard against this, Similarly, the Night Lands shift and change in line with human whim, and its inhabitants will fight back lest their homes vanish or transmogrify beneath their feet.
Chimera rarely come to the mortal world unless summoned – or unless it gives them a chance at stability. Ironically, human attention can afflict them with fragmentation – too much human fear and imagination can tear a chimera into multiple mindless monsters, all fighting for mutually exclusive goals. They also shy away from exposure to mirrors, cameras and other tools of reflection, which can trap them in harmful loops of shifting shapes.
